Mtech Digital Solutions Oy has developed a new Forest Calculator for Yara Suomi Oy, helping forest owners assess the fertilisation potential of their forests, estimate costs and evaluate the benefits of carbon sequestration. The easy-to-use tool supports forest owners in making fertilisation decisions by utilising publicly available forest resource data.
Using a property identifier, the Forest Calculator provides an estimate of the fertilisation potential of a forest plot and recommends a suitable fertiliser. The service also calculates estimated fertilisation costs and the projected carbon sequestration resulting from fertilisation.
“Fertilisation is the most profitable individual forest management measure. However, assessing whether fertilisation is suitable for a particular forest plot, or choosing the right fertiliser, can be challenging for forest owners. The Forest Calculator significantly simplifies the decision-making process,” says Juho Salmi, Product Manager for Forest Fertilisers at Yara.

“The Yara calculator highlights the most profitable forest fertilisation sites. The map-based interface is familiar to forest owners, and the calculator makes it easy to generate documentation for planning purposes. As a forest owner myself, I found this project particularly interesting and the solution genuinely useful,” says Mikko Jääskeläinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Mtech. Mtech implemented the user interface of the Forest Calculator.
Public forest resource data behind the calculator
The Forest Calculator utilises publicly available forest resource data as well as growth models for fertilisation to estimate fertilisation potential. Forest resource data is updated regularly in the service, although changes in the forest may appear in the calculator with a slight delay.
The current growth models are based on widely used research data. More recent research data does not yet provide sufficiently comprehensive coverage across Finland to allow it to be widely used in updating the growth models.
The Forest Calculator is available on Yara’s website at yara.fi/metsa and in the Oma Yara service designed for farmers.
